After having several days out of the studio, it’s nice to be back in with the direction I need. I spent time today re-recording some guitar tracks that were noise-laden with problems. I’ve got things to a point in that song where I don’t have to be in the studio to work on the rest of it. At the moment, I’m transcribing an old recording of mine that will become song number 5 for the album (that’s right, I’m practically finished recording 4 of the 8 songs that will be on this album). So, after I get this transcription finished, I will begin orchestrating and be on to recording.
Concerning the February newsletter, I’m about to start work on it. I was going to include a timeline audio clip of the song “There’s More To Us Than We See Now,” but I have changed my mind because I don’t want to give it away until the real drums get recorded for it. I’m still working on what goodie to put in the newsletter.. hmmm
I’ve been out of the studio for a few days after standing in front of some important decisions in my music. It’s when you stand in front of your work and ask yourself “Am I glorifying myself, or am I glorifying my Creator?” that really determines what you’re going to do with your life. I’ve spent much time in prayer and I’ve got a better idea of what it is that I need to be doing with my music. So, I think you will see me being more of a composer in the broadest sense of the term in the near future; which means more types of media and creation on my part for an Eternal value. I do look forward to this more valuable and rewarding adventure.
I’ve had a tremendously productive week in the studio and it continues on . Laying down guitar tracks for “Damages” at the moment..
Meeting with my producer on Tuesday to discuss further logistics… I look forward to showing him the records progress I’ve got done in the studio, as well.. While I’m getting so much done, the biggest downside is that it is music I’ve already written… I can’t wait to write something new.. I’ve got some galloping chromatics up my sleeve! Hmm. I might need to see a doctor about that
I’m very happy to be well underway with the recording of “Damages.” I still had the session files for the last time I recorded this; therefore, I was able to access my original orchestrations of the composition which I’m rather pleased with. Because of that, I was able to get all the orchestral recording finished this morning. I’ve altered my studio setup to accommodate recording symphonic tracks in my desktop computer while doing all the guitar tracks in my laptop (as I mentioned in my last post, I’m doing this to eliminate noise).
I’m finishing up recording on “There’s More To Us Than We See Now.” and about to look at recording the tracks to “Damages.” I’ve run into an interesting problem recording my guitar tracks lately. I’ve run into some noise in the computer that only occurs when I have my recording software on; and its noise transfers onto the guitar tracks. I think I can edit out the noise through a filter or just by just cutting it out… but its possible that it may lead to me re-recording all my rhythm guitar tracks.
I’m about to redo my studio setup to allow me to record through my laptop as well as my desktop computer. So I may be moving everything around in my studio very soon to accommodate this and to work around this small issue.
I spent time today in the studio recording all the rhythm guitar parts and most of the leads for “There’s More To Us Than We See Now.”. My desire for good guitar tone has certainly become more picky in my recent recordings and how I go about recording it has, as well. That’s probably why my fingers are dead right now: my Les Paul has the best tone of my guitars…and its action and string size tire my fingers greatly in that final tapping section
The recording this evening for “There’s More To Us Than We See Now” has gone extremely well… I’ve got most everything recorded as far as virtual instruments go (given some alterations I need to make) and I’ve got enough drum scratch tracks to begin recording guitar parts next. It definitely sounds huge and I can’t wait to get my guitar tracks in the mix, as well. Hooray for a new take on a 3 1/2 year old song
Going into the studio today to record the orchestrations to ‘There’s More to Us Than We See Now.’ Of all the songs I’ve gone into the studio with; I certainly know this one the best. I wrote the original un-orchestrated version in 2006, and the song has certainly stayed in my catalog as one of my favorite that deserves the best sounding orchestration. You can hear the original version on the album ‘Progressing Deviation.’ In next month’s newsletter, I’ll probably have a medley ‘There’s More to Us Than We See Now’ with the original version, live with the orchestra, and the new edition faded into each other.
This is the second composition I’ve taken from one of my orchestral scores and done a studio reduction. It is also the second to go from a studio recording, to an orchestral score, to a more orchestrated studio recording. Most of the work was already done already, so I just opened the score in Finale, did about an hour’s worth of edits and it was finished. Next is taking it into my studio for recording. I should be able to get some video footage of this next step
I’ve posted this short promo video on youtube in light of the upcoming singles I have due in the Spring. What I’m working on at the moment is the orchestration of ‘There’s More To Us Than We See” taken from the original score used at the Impassioned concert. Perhaps I can get a camera into the studio to catch some of the recording
